The 2008 award, the first annual award, was presented to Ms. Carmel Budiardjo. Imprisoned for three years under President Suharto’s brutal dictatorship, from 1968-1971, Ms. Budiardjo came back to her home country of England to fight for the rights of her fellow prisoners as well as the Indonesian citizenry. Founder of TAPOL, the Indonesian Human Rights Campaign, Ms. Budiardjo became a legend. In particular, she has been a leading champion of rights for the Papuan people, working with great success to mobilize the international community in their defense.
